Weight Loss App Review: Lose It!

I have been using the Lose It! app for the past 6 years. Through all the ups and downs of my weight loss journey, Lose It! has been there for me. As I’ve gotten older and started to focus on my overall health in addition to weight loss, have I truly come to appreciate just how comprehensive and versatile this app is.

The Pros

The best feature about this app is how easily it integrates with other technological platforms such as Apple, Samsung, Fitbit, Withings, and many other platforms. I’ve never had problems connecting or keeping my information updated automatically using the app. The app also has a huge database of foods. Only once or twice in the past six years I’ve been using it have I not been able to find a food in the database using the barcode scanner feature. You can also use the visual scan feature and the app will basically look at the food and guess what it is. This feature is really trippy! I appreciate how this app allows you to add as much health data as you want such as hydration, sleep, body fat, weight, blood sugars, blood pressures, etc. It’s basically a one stop shop for all your health monitoring needs. I personally like it better than Apple Health because all your data is available at a glance on the logging page. The design is much more aesthetically pleasing than other drab apps and incorporates bold colors and icons.

The Cons

Although this app is truly well-conceived, it does have some features that are not ideal. First and foremost, this app does not have robust social interaction features—although they are currently working on improving these features. A sense of community can really make a difference in weight loss and having an better social media option within the app would make it an even more attractive option. The database is indeed expansive but there is a lot of random recipes created by other users that pop up when you search for foods. There might be a way to filter out those results but I haven’t figured it out yet. If you want to connect your wireless device data, i.e. wearables and Bluetooth scales, you will need to pay for a premium membership. A yearly subscription to premium is $39.00 and a lifetime subscription is $189 without a premium membership and $149 if you’ve already purchased a year of premium. The premium membership does unlock other interesting features such as nutrient and goal insights, custom goals (ie body fat, sugar, steps, fiber, hydration, sleep), planning meals ahead, email reports, and advanced social interaction features. I find these features very useful because I’m focusing on my overall health as opposed to just weight loss, but I can see how the price would be a deal-breaker for others.

The Verdict

I think the Lose It! app is perfect if you want to monitor your health in one place, appreciate bold design, and don’t mind paying for a premium membership to get enhanced features. There are many apps that simply count calories but this app is truly helpful for health management. If you want all of your devices to connect to an app with ease, I cannot recommend Lose It! enough. I use the app to connect to my Withings scale and my Apple watch without any problems over the years. If you’re on the market for a new weight loss app, I would recommend giving Lose It! a try for free for a few weeks and upgrade to premium if you want to connect your devices to the app.
